Another tool i did not know existed. Optical devices are always expensive. Thanks for sharing.

Thats one nice piece of kit - Something I am looking after for a long time. But I might get the kit from Hemingway.. Thanks for sharing with us!

I have one of these too. Turn it through 180 degrees and put it in the chuck. Makes checking the tail stock for accuracy easy. I can scan in and send copy of manual if you still not got one. I use mine in my drill and milling machines. When accuracy matters it is the greatest tool ever!

Hi Emma, I have only come across them when used in a Mill or jig borer, and a drill of course, to centre over scribed lines for accurate drilling. The Hemingway one, which reminds me I must finish mine after a 10yr gap, has circles, as well as cross hairs, which should make drilling out broken screws somewhat easier, which the reason I started it in the first place. I often have to drill out broken bolts and screws, like you fellow countryman Bruce, hence the "shop of horrors", and accurate centring is a great asset.
Your other uses make me want to finish mine even more, if only i could remember where i put the bits, old age can be a bitch.

Hi there, Emma,

I think the correct procedure for using such an instrument is to focus the eyepiece to maximise the sharpness of the cross-hairs. Then focus on the tool or other object by adjusting the distance between the objective and the object, i.e. by moving the tail-stock barrel.

Is that the sequence you followed?

Very interesting tool (and video). I had never seen one of these center finder tools. Informative.

Ah so your the one that tore that from my clammy grasp !
Oh well ya win some ya lose some!
Looks like you got a good one, i was a little unsure of it as i'm always weary of optics i can't look through before o fork out the hard earned stuff!
Now just if i could get a good 3 D taster cheap as i really want one of those to stuff around with, I'm too afraid to put my hands in my pocket deep enough to drag out $800 + for a newbie, think my fingers would burst into flames !
Excellent video Emma, look forward to seeing more of that scope in action .

Beautiful instument. There are many instances when I could have used one, instead of staring through a loupe. Nowadays I am convinced that a low-power laser is the way to go, and in fact someone already makes one for a mill. See I see no reason why you couldn't make an adapter for a lathe tailstock, or for that matter put it in a headstock collet and check alignment of your tailstock. Al these things can be done with the centring microscope; only the laser is cheaper. I love optical gear, but my budget says lasers are cheaper.
