Pumpkins are grown primarily for processing, with a small percentage grown for ornamental sales through you-pick farms, farmers' markets, and retail sales. Most pumpkins are processed into the canned pumpkin and canned pie mix.

Pumpkin is extremely nutritious because it is high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Furthermore, its low-calorie level makes it an ideal weight-loss snack. Its minerals and antioxidants may strengthen your immune system, protect your vision, reduce your chance of certain malignancies, and support heart and skin health.

In Season: September and October

Pumpkins are native to Canada and have been grown here for hundreds of years. First Nations people ate them roasted, boiled, and stewed, and they roasted the seeds as well. Today, most pumpkins are used for jack-o-lanterns or pumpkin pie but there are many more ways to cook and enjoy pumpkins.

Types:
Pumpkins come in all shapes and sizes from small pie pumpkins to giant pumpkins that take a forklift to move. There are also carving pumpkins and novelty ones that are bumpy or come in white or shades of green and orange. Pumpkins are winter squash, butternut, Hubbard, buttercup, and acorn squashes.

The farm at Saint-Zotique, located west of the city, is a ticketed attraction that is well worth the fee. Access grants you access to a little village constructed of pumpkins, where you may travel through fields of pumpkins and squash varieties before perusing the colorful corn and hay bales. They also have regular weekend events to get you in the mood for autumn.
