Addiction is not a crime. It's an illness and we'd probably see less of these stories if we treated it as such. I used to judge my father for his addiction, but he lost his son (my half-brother) when he was 8 years old (before my sister and I were born). Having to watch his young child die a slow death (leukemia)...he said he picked up a bottle and never stopped. It's hard to say I blame him.

Do I get upset and angry? Yes. Do I wish things were different? Absolutely.
