Music genre don't matter as much as you think...

Should we stick to a music genre? That's a big debate in the music production community. Today, I share my thoughts as to why I do not care about "music genre". From standing out as an artist to creative freedom, it has a lot of benefits. Hope you enjoy!

Great video Aurelie and I resonate with what you are saying. I used to worry about genre before because I didn't know where my music fit in. This used to be debilitating for me and I had stopped making music several times. Similar, but different I recently I realized I can call my music whatever genre I want, and that was freeing for me. Thank you for creating! 🐻

The important thing is that you like your song. That's what I tell myself. I play touch guitar, a strange 10 string instrument that you tap the strings, has a bass side and "guitar" side. Sometimes I play ambient music and other times I play weird stuff that I change time signatures at every measure an polyrhythems. I like it,

Experimenting with genres is fun but when releasing, best is to keep the genre 'locked' for that artist name and create a new artist alias for some other genre - it's not a rule, it just makes life easier down the line. Audiences can be very picky when it comes to genres, there's a reason someone like Deadmau5 does one thing under that name and other things under the Testpilot alias. When the genre drifts too far, it's best to just create a new alias.

I have been told many times over the years "Remove that (something) that's not supposed to be in (something) genre" and My responce is "I don't care" I can't really describe most of what I do and even when is a chosen genre it don't fit into any sub genre. Its actually really annoying to have to keep thinking "Ohhh I can't use this sound or cant do it like that" I just do what ever I think sounds good, thats it, I don't try to sound like anyone.

This is fantastic advice. I spent so much of my life stressing about this subject to the points of making multple aliasis which was a bad idea for me.

I'm too old for that. By the time I find the "new" genres, they are already years old anyway. But all of it is still just basically pop, rock, R&B, Techno, Trance, Ambient, Folk...oh! Never mind, even the old school genres are too many! 😆

But its still true. Its not easy to get heard if your track doesnt fit in. Not everyone got the chance to find a label even if the music is really good. So to build a following sadly you have to follow the rules of the curators. At least thats is my experience.
