Looked up why this happens. Neuroscientist from B.U. explained it like this: those that are more attuned to high frequency sound will hear "yanny", while those who are less attuned to high frequencies will hear "laurel". As to why we sometimes hear both, this is a phenomenon referred to in psychology as a "bi-stable illusion", which refers to how we can interpret something as one way or another for no discernible reason. At the end of the day neither yanny or laurel is correct or incorrect, it's just a matter of what frequencies our ears are more or less sensitive to.
