These protesters may be totally brutally suppressed I am afraid.
So sad.
When I was a medical student in Pakistan in 1969 we protested against the dictators general Ayyub Khan and they came looking for me and I had go underground for months.
Later I escaped to the USA. Pakistan fell apart 1971 when I went back to participate in the liberation war for Bangladesh which was East Pakistan.
Hope China can break out of their chain from their despot and dictators. Sad.
Regards to the Chinese people.

One of the largest triggers was Chinese people watching the world cup and they saw no one wearing masks from no country anywhere in the world. That made them furious.

The demonstrations brought me back 33 years ago when I was protesting in the campus, on the street and Tiananmen Square. I thought the young generation had lost the passion that we had. I was wrong. Hope the U.S. can show some support of the demonstrators and hold the Chinese government accountable for its retaliation against the demonstrators.

Trust the U.S. can show a few help to the demonstrators and consider the Chinese government responsible for its counter against the demonstrators.

It amazes me that a billion people are ruled by one. Hopefully the Chinese keep up the momentum and can create some form of democracy.

A research team at McGill discovered that after just a few hours, isolation can lead to a distorted perception of time, high levels of anxiety, and even hallucinations. Case studies of prisoners kept in solitary confinement also indicate that a lack of human contact can lead to a cognitive breakdow

“Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.” ― Frederick Douglas

A man that gets all sensitive about a cartoon character should never rule a country with such a rich culture and history.

One point that Zakaria mentioned in this interview needs to be correct. China generally doesn't allow ANY protests, unless they have government background aiming to show angers to other contries. Although protesting is a civil right written in China's constitution, any organized protesting needs to be approved by government and police, which you'd never succeed. From time to time, in extreme curcumstances people may just go on the streat without approval, and as long as it's not against the government and/or the party, the government may accept their propositions, and even make limited compromises, but also always punish the organizors afterwards. So in this sense, what we saw in the recent protests in the China mainland is real bravery.

They should have mentioned the fire that killed at least ten people in Urumqi, in Xinjiang. Many people suspected that a Covid lockdown had hampered rescue efforts or trapped victims inside their homes.

You have not seen this since Vietnam, Central America, Iraq, and Afghanistan. The double standard is grotesque.
