You forgot a fact: boats used to drop sticks and plank when they hit a block

Old boats:
- Doesn't have oars
- Break into planks and sticks when causing a collision
- Probably works on ice
- Slow
- Have bad control

New boats:
- Does have oars
- Doesn't break when causing a collision
- Works on all ice (Packed and blue ice)
- Faster than the old one
- Have good control

You didn’t mention how In Bedrock Edition, for the longest time the boats couldn’t break if they ran into something
While in Java edition they were so fragile a tiny tap would turn the boat into sticks
