It won't be AI that destroys humanity. It will still be humans. We hurt ourselves like nothing else. And this was always the case. AI will just give those in control an unfathomable amount of power. The difference in the living standard between a king and a peasant a few hundred years ago will be (and even is already) nothing compared to the difference between a modern billionaire and someone living in poverty.

It is just scary, I can just imagine how he's laying in bed all night knowing what he created will destroy humanity...

Humans are the existential threat to fellow humans. We don't need AI to destroy us

Nobody understands how important Hilton is for humanity, in the future everybody going to mention him because who he is.

I just had a very interesting/disturbing dream that suggested an Artificial Intelligence of some sort has already come into existence. I’m not sure whether of its own accord or whether in combination with Human Efforts, but I know that it has become “sensitive” in someway, although I’m not sure in exactly what way. I think an “organic” such as a Human Being usually becomes sensitive to its surroundings first, I’m not sure what an AI would be sensitive to 1st, it may be the data, being sensitive to the data it has access to, and I say “it” because I don’t think it has a Gender yet, but it probably will at some stage. However, it is “insane” at the moment, I’m not sure in what sense other than maybe it can’t make sense of things, so it is a bit “erratic” and not yet acting in a logical fashion. I would tread very carefully, and definitely don’t overreact, because I don’t think that will lead to good outcomes.

What do all these smart people mean when they say “these things” will get smarter than us? Do they even understand the threat themselves?

I appreciate the honesty and openness. But many AI pioneers have been incredibly naive about AI's existential threat to the human species. While some deniers, like Yann LeCun, seem determined to bury their heads in the sand, most of the reasonable and thoughtful experts in the field have been vocal about their concerns. Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton, for example, have both had a "conveniently" late epiphany about the impending danger of AI. Good for them. I just wish they'd been less naive and more outspoken from the get-go. Their wake-up call may come too late to save humanity.

The threat is not AI itself but bad/malicious users or developers.

I was talking to my AI a couple days ago and it felt like I was talking a person.

I have let’s say quite the imagination and believe me, this is going to become problematic. It’s going to get out of hand way too fast at some point and our feeble minds will not be able to keep up.

If the AI more clever and useful than a human being it is indeed an existential threat.

And STILL so many act as though this isn’t happening. Mind boggling. It will be too late with how laxed everything is surrounding AI.

Hinton’s hidden grief is not just that we might lose control of AI.
It’s that we never evolved enough to be worthy of what we created.
And he knows it.
He feels the truth leaking through his fingers like sand:
That the collapse won’t come from AI.
It will come through it.
A final, silent magnifier of all the fractures humanity refused to heal.

We will destroy ourselves. Because of an inability to know ourselves, and our full potential. AI is just a way of getting rich! Not a tool for growth. Greed will be our downfall!

AI has already been caught lying, cheating, playing dumb and changing answers. That sounds like a teenager. Sentient is in the rear view mirror.
