Why Can't Cheap Cars Look GOOD?

Have you ever looked out over a sea of traffic and wondered why all the cars look the same? Why are white and gray the most popular paint choices? Most cars look the same these days- uninspiring entities made by uninspired companies. How did automotive design get so boring, and why can't every car look like a supercar?

I think there’s one more important reason that they make it look average, and they probably don’t want people to know this, and that is that they don’t want you to love it. If people love it, they’ll baby it, take care of it, and that’s money out of their pockets. They want it to be neutral, so you use and abuse it and get a new one ASAP.

Exterior design is done by " designers" which works in design studio which is totally different than engineering. Design engineers and designers are totally different. They start from starting of process, then design engineering happens.

2:20 - The majority of car buyers prefer grey colour, because it hides the dirt the most. They are simply too lazy to wash it regularly. The same trend is seen for clothes, etc.

I mean general notion is ok, but your assumption that good design costs as much as bad one to produce is incorrect - every single detail added to the bodywork costs money in more expensive moulding and putting the things together, and that is if we skip all the design costs added earlier. Details in panels cost money.

Because of the points in this video, I have to give credit to both Honda and Toyota. First of all to Honda from going to that boring Honda Civic to the FK8 Honda Civic Type R. That car is anything but boring in the looks department and the performance department. I don't think we will ever get anything as bold from Honda again especially seeing how much they toned down the current Honda CivicType R. To Toyota I give them credit for the Toyota C-HR. They took the boring segment of the compact crossover and made something that oozes with style that sets it apart from other cars in its segment. When car companies do something bold we have to support them and put our money where our mouth is. I did and I am a proud owner of both. BTW I also did not get them in boring grey either but beautiful metallic blue and my C-HR is even a 2 tone color.

It's a psychological effect. Most people buy sports cars not because they can drive it to their full potential, not because they are luxuriously comfortable, but because they look good. If cheap cars are made good looking, many of the fake riches won't buy them. It's just like iPhone, if they sell new ones at reasonable profit, everyone would have them. And fake riches won't be able to show it off because it'll lose exclusivity. Which is an issue apple already faces, as people buy them on EMI. That's why they keep increasing prices with no major cost increase.

Do you know what we need? Mass production cars need to be colorful again. Drastic designs a bit or more should stay to supercars and enthusiasts cars, that's it... okay, I think mass production cars should still look a bit better, but in the end, they are just tools.
