How many times do you have to go to the cave to get kelp?

I spent 1 hour looking in that cave with 3 different sims never found the kelp. It's so irritating. 😮‍💨😮‍💨. At one point they found dolphins who gave them some kelp idk if it was mermaid kelp or not, but for some reason they threw it back.... I became so irritated.... I'm going to try one more time before I start using cheats...
