I believe why this version of Staryu being a Dragon type is because in Japanese “Ryu” means dragon 🐉

The first two stages of the Bramblin Pokemon may be a reference to a few things.

First, there was an old song called "A Bird in a Gilded Cage" which was a ballad about a young woman who married for money but passes away young because she is unloved and depressed.

Then, there are a few Middle Eastern and Asian folk tales of a king whose mental anguish is soothed by the songs of the birds in his gardens. He has the birds trapped in gilded cages so he can listen to their songs when ever he wants, but the birds become sick and cease their singing. The king is heart broken to see his beloved birds hurt and immediately frees them and destroys the cages. For a long time, the birds stay away, fearing they will be caged again, but slowly they return to sing to the king who turns his garden into a sanctuary for all the birds.


The final stage may be a reference to how some performers believe they are prisoners to their talents but also find security in that prison.

I don't know if it was intentional for the first pokemon but Ryu in Japanese means "dragon" so Staryu is even more fitting as a new dragon type pokemon with a star on his head

This version of Marshadow is epic because the heron in question actually uses shadows in its hunting techniques! It forms an umbrella over the water with its wings (like the pre-evo!) and then hunts the creatures that swim under the shadow canopy created that way!

Barboach is based off of a fish genius called Loaches, which depending on the species can have small tusks/barbs near their mouth. For example, the Yoyo loach, which I personally think barboach is based of off.

Imagine if Generation X of Pokémon actually did the concept of new Pokémon but with the same names as older Pokémon. I could imagine a scenario where the Ultra Wormholes from the Gen VII games would have something to do with this idea, as you literally travel to different worlds and encounter never-before-seen Pokémon, mainly Ultra Beasts. But what if that was expanded? What if we could further explore the worlds where Pheramosa, Buzzwole, Guzzlord, and so forth and encounter new Pokémon with similar names to older Pokémon?

I think the pan in pansage comes from and has to do with cooking and sage is an herb also silyn(pansages intended trainer from the getgo) the gym leader in the game and the anime is a cook
