Making a Woven Cutting Board

Hey,

In this video we make a cutting board out of strips of Cherry, Maple, Walnut, and Purpleheart. We started out by milling the strips using a miter saw, jointer, planer, and table saw. We then glued the strips up into two different sections. Using double sided tape we ran the two sections through the bandsaw with one piece positioned directly on top of the other. We then rearranged the cut pieces and glued them back together with a thin strip of Walnut in between. After completing this process four times, we did a bunch of sanding and then finished the board with a mix of mineral oil and wax.

We hope you enjoy the video!

Thanks!
Evan

This is the most beautiful design that I have seen, of many beautiful cutting boards to choose from. Thank you for sharing your process, God Bless.

Well done

I make cutting boards as well! I’ve been trying to learn how to make the woven ones and your vid was by far the best! Maybe a step by step tutorial in the future??

beautiful work! Ive tried these, but when i put the boards together, and cut the weave, the 2 corresponding pieces don't fit tight without a few gaps along the length, any idea why? is the table not square to the band saw blade? Am i cutting too fast? Can't seem to get it to fit bug the entire length of the cut.

What’s the reason for the heat gun. Haven’t seen that method before

Awesome work ! I didn't get how did you manage the change of colour with the heat gun ? Is it due to a specific type of wood ?

Re: comment about poor fit and band saw blade. IMO you're likely to have issues if the blade is too narrow. Think of it like this: as a narrow blade follows line it twists left and right of that line, causing it to take some material out "along the sides" so to speak. Now you have gaps. If this is a problem with 1/4" blade, try again with 1/2". The back end of the wider blade has a better chance of being guided by the channel you just made.

What woods have you used to make this?

What's with the music??? Sounds like a few songs playing over each other. Really distracting. Nice board though.
