I love calls with lower income, more relatable. Average household make under 70k/yr.

Doesn't take into account; Gas, Registration fees, Tags, Insurance, unexpected car costs, and if you're in CA, Smog check..

It's 2021, a reliable 1, 000 car doesn't really exist

He's not including insurance and gas money in what they'll save monthly if they get a car.

I'm afraid that if he buys a $1000 car he's going to need $2000 to keep it running. I'd like to know how this turned out.

1, 000 dollar corolla would work not the best looking car but will help you get around and a great gas saver

That $1000 car won't ran on air, it needs insurance, gas and maintenance which Dave forgot about. Make sure you can afford all the expenses (write down everything and do the math right). It's not that cheap to have a car. It's possible but it won't be easy.

That "huh-uh" from the caller tells me that he has a car rush.

Old ford crown vic's are one of the best $1, 000 cars money can buy.

Caller: Hello, I throw money out the window and light my farts with $100 bills.
Dave: Whats your household income?

Start looking into alternatives, bus or train.

Finding a 1k car is tough in the philly market. Good luck to this guy, next 2 months will be tough. Hoping SEPTA/public transport could possibly help him.

I'm from Toronto but isn't there public transit in Philadelphia? It's cold up here too and I take public transit. Parking is too expensive in downtown Toronto.

A $1, 000 car must either be a Crown Vic or Toyota. Anything else is a huge mistake.

In Canada, $400/month is pretty close to the minimum possible expense of operating a vehicle. You need to take ALL expenses into account, including insurance, registration, interest payments, amortization, fuel, maintenance, and parking. Most people ignore several of these, and end up miscalculating their actual expenses by up to half.

I live in a central, urban area, and I spend $30/month on public transit and about another $150/month on car rentals one or two weekends a month. Most of my car rentals are full size, current year, under 10, 000 miles, and I often end up with a Chrysler 300, Hyundai Sonata, or something similar. People ask me when I'm going to buy my own car and I can't envision that day even coming.

I think because Dave lives Nashville, he forgets other places have good public transportation. Why doesn’t he ask if these people can take a train or bus or bike instead of getting a car? He’s very car focused based on the calls I’ve listened to. Edit never mind I just heard him mention public transportation

Considering the bad weather and all, and the potential 1000 whip your looking to definitely keep emergency water and food and blankets inside...
