Human societies have long used the theme of the quest for self-knowledge as a vehicle to assess their own cultures and to explore ethical situations arising in civic life. This course examines texts from diverse cultural traditions in which protagonists confront their inherited identity of culture and language, providing a broader perspective on self-discovery in our own society.

Professor Hughes, I have listened to all your lectures so far in this series. I have enjoyed them immensely and learned a lot. And I also have become fond of you personally. So I just want to say that I am so very sorry for the loss of your wife and your friend. I am touched by your sharing this with your students. I'm sure it will help them when they face loss in their lives.

There are many reasons why this is an 'award-winning class', and I don't know if this will reach you Prof. Hughes, but the primary reason why I love your lectures is the human face behind the podium, sharing stories funny and sad, all told in such good faith that one can't help but be moved. Thank you!
