Can you believe it, this piece was written when Chopin was in his early twenties?
What is a Nocturne first of all? It is a genre of classical music developed in 1800s by a composer John Field. Nocturnes are usually soothing and slow-tempo pieces which are not strictly played with time. Frédéric Chopin was inspired by John Field and wrote 21 such Nocturnes.
This is one of those pieces which are easy to learn but tough to master. It is almost like an Étude (pieces which are meant to develop certain technique in playing) for ornaments. "Ornaments", in simple terms, mean decoration of melody by addition of extra notes. There are so many chromatic notes and changes in tempo which pianists struggle to cope up with in this particular piece. Many orthodox mentalities like strictly playing on time and not using thumb on black keys were broken by this amazing composer, Frédéric Chopin.
My name is Abhi Joshi. I am a pianist and I aspire to become the best I could imagine of myself. I post Classical, Western, Bollywood and Contemporary piano arrangements on Mondays!
Thank you Rousseau, Kassia, Twoset Violin, Linkin Park, Alice Sara Ott, Lang Lang and a million other musicians for inspiring me to do what I like to do.
