Belarus migrants given shelter and refuge after violent border clashes with Polish security forces.

Belarusian state news agency BELTA said on Tuesday (November 16) evening border guards had started moving some migrants to a reception centre away from the frontier. Belarusian and Polish border guards said on Wednesday (November 17), around 2,000 migrants remained at the fence.

European countries accuse Minsk of flying in thousands of migrants, mainly from the Middle East, and pushing them to cross the border illegally as a tactic to punish Europe for sanctions imposed over a Belarusian crackdown on pro-democracy protesters.

Belarus calls the accusation it created the crisis absurd but says the EU must lift sanctions if it wants to resolve it.

Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko has lost its border battle with Poland, Warsaw has said, and now faces a humanitarian crisis with some 20,000 migrants stranded inside its territory.

After an eight-day stand-off on the border, Belarus finally offered respite to migrants that had been camped out in freezing conditions in the hope of breaking through border defences to travel to the EU.

And amid reports that migrants are being bussed away from the area surrounding the Kuznica border crossing, a deputy interior minister in Poland has boasted that "Lukashenko has lost the border battle”.

It came as a stretch of Russia’s major oil pipeline to Europe in Belarus was shut down for maintenance, reinforcing allegations that Minsk is waging a “hybrid war” against the EU.
