Thanks go out to Tom Oddo of Goldspot Pens for providing this Sailor Tuzu for review. I unbox it, talk about the parts and features of the pen, provide some size comparisons and measurements, and then do a writing sample. After the writing sample, I talk about what I like and what I don't like about the pen. Please feel free to use the chapters provided below to skip to various parts of the review.

I liked your comments about lady handers. My mom's mom was left handed. When she was in school the teacher used to use a ruler on my grandmother's hand. When my great grandmother found out about it she went to school to talk to the teacher about it. You use a ruler on my daughter's hand again I will be back to use the ruler on you.

From 3:40 at the latest, I couldn't stop laughing. Thanks for this entertaining review! 😃
Of my Sailors, I only really like the ProGears, the cheaper ones not so much.
On the other hand, I also really like the more affordable pens from Platinum, especially the Plaisir. 🥰

Have to say, this review is the most comprehensive and detailed Tuzu review. I'm still not convinced about the pen because of its non "entry" price level. But the nib and its adjustable triangular grip section has something which attracts me. And i I'm glad that you confirmed my initial prejudice about the injection molded plastic material, which I was immediately convinced would create a "cheap feel". Something I would tolerate with a 10 Dollar pen, but not with a USD 44 pen. I generally like Sailor FP's but I feel that the company has pushed itself out of focus in recent years. If the Tuzu might push Sailor back into the more glamorous spotlight, I doubt.

I received mine a few weeks ago. I chose the mint color and enjoy writing with it. The grip does help me, due to three past surgeries on my right thumb. 😳. As a result I have areas of no feeling in my thumb, so gripping can be fussy. I too learned to hold my pens and pencils correctly! I can still “hear” my teacher Mrs. Holk giving us instructions and her insistence on doing it correctly! Great cursive as well. But now my thumb is fussy. 😂

great review Doug! Can't wait to see you and Doodlebud's review on the new Nahvalur retractable fountain pens!! If they are good I will probably buy one. Also can't wait for you to get your hands on a Magna Carta flex nib. It's something everyone should experience. It's that good!

with all due respect to Sailor you can twist the nib inside the kakuno to fit your grip too and for a cheaper price ...

Thanks for an excellent overview. My 1964 Parker 75 has an adjustable nib. I'm surprised more pens have not had this feature.

I’m a lefty and I learned how to hold a pen properly in my left hand. The only adjustment I needed was to twist my hand a fraction to the left so my fingers went under the line of wet ink. No weird grip for me!

Amusing review :-)

Fun anecdote… I can say with confidence that the “training wheels” are helpful for some folks . My son has dysgraphia, and giving him a Lamy ABC fountain pen did wonders for his handwriting, and it was even praised by his occupational therapist. Our friends with special needs deserve the joy of fountain pens too 😃

I'm with you Doug, I learned how to hold a pen quite a long time ago, and this pen would do nothing for me. Besides, I don't have the attraction to Sailor pens that everybody else seems to have. After all, I only have 2 and they are under $35!!

I was hoping you would haul out your barrel inspection camera. I thought of you as a pen proctologist, A new branch of "penmanship"!😁

Unless the Sailor is discontinuing the 1911 Compass, I'd say the Compass is actually Sailor's entry level pen. It's about 20 USD cheaper than the Tuzu, but not nearly as good as the entry level Pilot and Platinum pens. Also, the Tuzu has another feature that is getting no notice because of the adjustable grip. If I'm not mistaken, you don't have to dip the entire nib in to fill the pen. It fills through the "heart hole, " which is essentially the breather hole -- theoretically making for a cleaner fill. I got one for a friend and got to try it out with a broad nib. I tend to rotate my pen slightly, so a 10-20 percent adjustment in the grip section made the triangular grip more workable for me. The nib writes well. But I have no problem using regular round grip sections, and the pen feels very plasticky, so I won't be buying one for myself.

I think the proper market comparison is Lamy Safari + converter, or as you had, Pilot Explorer + converter. I think that's where Sailor is trying to have a profitable steel nib pen, since so much of their business is dependent on gold nib pens, which puts their profits at the mercy of gold prices.

Also, I love the nib on mine. To me that's the best part of the pen. It works from any writing angle.

Your videos are always so entertaining that I'll watch even if the pen you're featuring isn't for me. Thank you!

The idea of the moving grip is very curious but it's for sure a bit expensive.
