When the F-4 was initially released, it was criticized for being overweight, too big etc.
When the F-14 was introduced, it was too heavy and too underpowered.
The F15? Engines didn't meet initial performance targets and there was a huge scandal when those engine performance targets were relaxed in a slightly dodgy way. Big initial issues with radar and overall reliability.
And every single one of these went obscenely over budget during development.
All of the above planes went on to become worldbeaters. It's just the nature of the industry: to win a contract you have to overpromise on capability and be too optimistic on timelines and costs. Then you have to manage the fallout when everything falls apart. But in the end, you end up with amazing planes. It just takes longer and costs more.

So glad to have a real pilot talk about the F-35.

As a Navy vet. and crew member on the Enterprise, I miss the F-14 Tomcat. Good luck with flying the F-35!

History repeating itself. I remember there were similar problems, and negative press with the F111, however once the bugs were sorted out it gave 40+years sterling service to the USAF & the Australian air force.

I remember when the F35 first came out and it had the HUD, you could see through the floor of the aircraft by looking down. Some pilot said it was useless, he would just roll the plane to view with his own eyes. What he did not know is that would alter the RCS of the F35 on radar. Lots of uneducated comments

Spot on. From an old pilot (52 years and still flying), your testimony serves your Nation well:-)

I talked to a Marine Corps F-35 pilot at our last air show here and he pretty much mirrored what you said.

Brilliant, balanced, informative and unclassified! :-) Great to have a real pilot talk about it. A much-needed video. All the best, Rob in Switzerland.

Good news is boring!
That's why all news is doom and gloom.
Most enjoy having something to be upset about.

This is one of the best talks I’ve heard about new technologies not just applicable to the F35 but to any new paradigm shift.

Very optimistic of you, Hazard, to assume that I'm sitting in an office in front of a computer and not in the bathroom for the last 15 minutes. 🤙

I loved the F16 the minute I saw it for the very first time, and now I feel the same way about the F35. The aircraft is beautiful beyond belief and the best part of it is that it's shared among the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corp. In the early 1970's we had at least 10 different aircraft on board the Independence. It was insane. We had to carry spare parts for all these different aircraft. So much better now with the F35s. Absolutely love this aircraft!

Finally, someone with undeniable experience making sense of all the garbage out there. Well done.

F16 has to be one of the most beautiful jets ever designed.

I was a U.S. Army tanker , We had the same kind of thing then the NEW M1 tank came out . Everyone was yelling how bad it was . But Look at a M1 tank now .

Thank for your service young man. As a Air Force Veteran myself glad to see people like you serving this great nation. Thank for taking the time to make and post this video. I myself am currently working for a subcontractor of Lockheed Martin as aerospace machinist. I’m proud to say that I get to make aircraft parts for the F35 and other aircraft such as the C130/AC130. Glad to hear that most of “bugs” that the F35 has had in the past have been ironed out. Good luck and God bless you and your family. God bless America.👍🏼👌🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏🙏🙏.

The F35 received so much negativity because of its rediculous cost.

Best explanation I've heard on the development and and reputation of the F-16 vs the F-35 from a guy who knows both aircraft from the seat. Job well done and thank you.

My friend is a retired F-15 pilot and he knows a couple RAF Harrier pilots that hated the F-35 and did not want to intergrade into it, until they got in the simulators. He said, they could not believe how good it was.

There's a reason why the F-16 was initially nicknamed the "lawn dart"
