I just still use the black shield with the sun mark in the middle. Is not the best, but it is so good-looking!

Fire affinity on the Finger Print Shield gives you 100% fire damage negation.

You can bully Messmer with guard counters or shield pokes.

Brass shield is also really good when it comes to the value for the cost. Best overall negations/guard boost out of every medium shield despite being pretty lightweight with low requirements (16STR, very accessible), and even outperforms over half the greatshields in the game all while still being able to apply ashes of war to it.

Now granted, there's a world of a difference between 75 guard boost and 86 (fingerprint shield has about 77% more effective stamina) but for 32 less STR and 1/4 the weight, it's pretty dang good

The only heavy shield I ever got any use out of was the Black Steel Greatshield. It has 100% physical absorption and a whopping 87% holy, so I used it for Consort Radahn. Hid behind it and shield-poked my way to victory with a bleed weapon. Not a glorious victory, to be sure, but a victory nonetheless.

For guard counter build that one that drops from Godrick's soldiers is pretty good, If Im not wrong It has the most guard boost in the game at +25 (for medium shields) and has 100% physical negation at standart infusion, its really good.
