I will note that you can also just use the 4K timeline and set the resolution of your window to 1/2, which basically makes it full res at1080. You get the exact same performance without having to change the scale of all of the footage in the timeline.

I have a short film  that was uploaded to my channel in 4K that I actually edited natively at 5K with no issues.

Thank you Dave for showing me the way to put 4K into 1080 time line there is little to zero info on how to do this believe me i have looked. if your new to premiere like myself this tutorial is gold.

The telltale point is at 1:40 in your video. When you leave Maximum Bit Depth and Maximum Render Quality unchecked in your Sequence Settings dialog, you are running Premiere in 8-bit compositing mode. That's what is giving you responsive editing and preview performance, at the expense of rendering quality. The reason you don't see any visual difference between 4K and 1080p Sequence Settings is because the original footage is being (non-destructively) rendered at 8-bit precision in both cases. What you're comparing in Photoshop are two different ways to render equivalent 8-bit results at 1080p resolution, using the same 4K video source footage.

Dave, I prefer your review/tutorial videos over any other review videos on YouTube - hands-down.  Your lighting has always been exceptional.  3 questions please!  What kind of lighting do you use (brand and bulbs) and what is your method of using it? My last question is about 4k cameras.  Would you say (if the funds were available) it would be wise to pick up a 4k camera now (looking at the Black Magic Ursa) or just continue to shoot in 1080 (we own a 5D MK III) for a couple more years?  Thanks for providing YouTube with your knowledge and professional quality videos.  I'm clicking on that B&H link now!

I assure you, if you publicly express your love for the GH4, you will be accused of being paid by Panasonic.  If comments are to be believed, we're paid by Panasonic, Sony, Canon, JVC, Pentax, Nikon, and Fuji.  Yet we seem no wealthier for having really liked some cameras those companies made...

I had the same issue as below where it was cropping too. So I just edited the whole thing as 4k footage in the timeline and then rendered as a YouTube 1080 video using the premiere template... not sure if that's the best way but worked ok.

I watched this video for the "down-scaling" and its great information. I just started getting loaned equipment from companies for reviews and blogs, so the advice to keep at arms length came in handy. Awesome video.
