I've heard Ed Sheeran talk about this during an interview. He said that all pop songs these days are made of the same 4 chords. He dared the interviewer to give him any song name and he was able to play it on his guitar. It's crazy. I guess that's the reason why a lot of people are bored of "mainstream" music. I personally don't mind it as long as the song has great lyrics and is performed well or is catchy. But it also explains why Ed is this "song writing machine" that creates hundreds of songs each year and sells them to other singers. I guess once you understand the principles of number one hits you're able to recreate them as often as you want.
