Reacher told him he didn't need to, implying that he has perfect awareness and recall. Reacher asks Emerson for his opinion on why Barr paid for parking that day. Emerson speculates that Barr did it as a reflex, without realizing he was even doing it.

Subtle moment here when Emerson says ‘muscle memory’ triggers something in Reacher hence the glance away. It’s the muscle memory comment which eventually leads Reacher to realise that Barr’s ‘muscle memory’ would in fact be to choose the bridge as the firing position on trained instinct. Emerson unwittingly opens the door for Reacher to solve the whole thing.

Lmao i love how smart reacher is. The cop ask him what the serial # on barrs rifle is. He then ask the yr on the qrt, the detective cant answers so reacher answers. Then after maybe 2 hours and a bar fight. Reacher see the detective and 1 of the first thing he says is "4862681" and cop just grows more pissed

The extra dimension is this scene is, of course, that Reacher already suspects the detective and thats why he asks about the quarter.

One of the greatest acting moments in cinema. The subtle change in face and tone "What's the date on the quarter?" He says playfully. "1968." The seriousness in that delivery. This isn't a joke, it isn't a game. 5 people are dead and someone is going to be executed for it.

Tom Cruise seems to me to be incapable of delivering a poor performance. You can tell how every actor he works with steps up their game to try and keep up with him.
