“What are you?” It’s a question Trelawny, the son of Jamaican immigrants, is asked and asks himself throughout If I Survive You. Growing up, Trelawny tries on various identities, all the while offering wry commentary on his uncomfortable situation and the circumstances of those around him. We also see the world through the eyes of his brother, his parents, and his cousin, and through these at times disparate viewpoints, perhaps we come closer to answering Trelawny’s question. Or maybe we leave with more questions regarding who and what any of us are in a world that so desperately demands categorization.

ABOUT JONATHAN ESCOFFERY
Jonathan Escoffery is the author of the linked story collection, If I Survive You (MCD/ Farrar, Straus & Giroux). He is the recipient of the 2020 Plimpton Prize for Fiction, the 2020 ASME Award for Fiction, and a 2020 National Endowment for the Arts Literature fellowship. His writing has appeared in The Paris Review, American Short Fiction, Electric Literature, Zyzzyva, and AGNI, and has been anthologized in The Best American Magazine Writing 2020 and elsewhere. Jonathan is a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University and resides in Oakland, CA.

I'm driving through your book reviews & suggestions as I've never done. Stumbling upon this

You see, I know (not at all well, however) the author. Nearly twenty years ago, we met, via a writer's site called Writer's Cafe (a place created for writers to share their work, collaborate, critique...many of us even met a few times via lovely writer's retreats...it was GLORIOUS). I called him J.Esco. He was one hell of a writer, then, &, it seems, he's only gotten better with age & experience, which is awesome to know. This title has been on my list for at least a year, now. The premise drew my unyielding attention.

After my next read, this.

Damn, but what great years those were. I met a lot of truly gifted writers for consecutive years. A handful became genuine family, & still are.
