Cemetery Women - Her Name Was Mary Mallon

Показать описание
'Typhoid Mary' was a woman called Mary mallon, who found herself at the centre of medical confusion and misunderstandings in the early 20th century.
Hailing from Northern Ireland, Mary made her profession as a cook, which paid well for domestic roles of the time. But her food-handling also left a trail of devastation in her wake - as she was an symptomatic carrier of Typhoid. She was warned not to continue working in roles that brought her into contact with other people, but she took little notice: she neeeded the money. And she was perfectly well! Why should she pay attention!
Before we truly knew how the disease spread, Mary was forced into isolation as healthcare authorities in New York tried to save lives from one of the most virulent diseases of the time - but at what cost to her happiness?
Mary was made an example of by being a super-spreader for a disease she had no control over - and she wasn't helped by the limited medicine of the time.
For #WomensHistoryMonth we're off to the Bronx to learn about her life & death.
