First and Second Messengers in Cell Signaling: Part 1

Показать описание
The two important messengers in the context of cell signaling are:
a. First Messengers
b. Second Messengers
This video is focusing on first messengers and will be followed by a video on second messengers and then on the differences between the two.
First messengers are extracellular signaling molecules (also called as ligands). They bind with receptors located on the surface of the cells (therefore, are extracellular substances). But, once they bind with their respective receptors, they are able to initiate intracellular activities or initiate changes within the cell. Generally, the first messengers are very diverse like environmental factors, hormones (Epinephrine), neurotransmitters (dopamine), peptides or proteins.
In order to receive signals from first messengers, there are different receptors
Ion channels
Intracellular receptors (mostly for hydrophobic ligands)
G-protein coupled receptors
Single-pass transmembrane receptors.
First messengers help organisms to receive information from the outside world.
First messengers facilitate the communication between cells
