A truly phenomenal band who deserved greater recognition for their blazing material. Long live Captain Beyond.

Rod Evans should continue singing.... He was talented. Too bad he just disappeared.

In 1971, this was seriously cutting edge rock art (and, in 2021, still is!!!)...what a seriously good video for its era and a terrific performance/concert...!

Great live performance from everyone!! This band should be WAY more popular. The first album is a 70s hard rock masterpiece. One of my favorite albums of all time and a huge influence on my own musical career. RIP Lee Dorman.

The best of all 1970's Unfortunately, they were always a musician's band. Things might have panned out differently had they not been on Capricorn Records, predominantly a Southern Rock label. Their album is timeless and still has the thrills and rock out moments with a nice serving of progressive rock as well. Bobby Caldwell is the man! I spoke with the late Lee Dorman on the last Iron Butterfly tour and he told me that he really loved Captain Beyond as much as all of us.

Love this glimpse into “how it was done” circa 1972. No drum riser, just a tight combo set up with double amplifier stacks on each side! Give the sound man some credit here, excellent tones and separation. Rhino must be using a Uni-Vibe and he uses it with great taste and restraint. No humbuckers in sight on either the Stratocaster guitar OR the Fender Telecaster Bass !! They managed to achieve that huge wall of sound using “only”single coil pickups (plus double Marshall heads and double Ampeg SVT’s). It’s only my opinion but it seems obvious that this is Bobby’s band, in both the song structures and the general on-stage vibe, not a criticism in any way, just an observation. Did I mention his superb drumming? Overall, Captain Beyond was way ahead of their time and also OF their time. Their musical style combines so many influences: Jazz, Latin and Blues are the most obvious, but there is plenty of proto-metal riffage and also an endearing pop sensibility that now-a-days would be instantly rejected. Stoner rock with science fiction lyrics and the odd social commentary, PERFECT. +++AAA. Thanks for posting.

Every time I hear Rhino I am floored by how ahead of his time he was.

Bobby Caldwell's drumming here, greatly appreciated and enjoyed is better than he is today and still plays with great musicians. Check out the 2017 show: CAPTAIN BEYOND AT ACE'S LIVE MUSIC

I am one of the very few who can say he saw them live. They opened for Black Sabbath and Gentle Giant, Hollywood Bowl, 1972. They played the entire first record, "Captain Beyond", all the way through and they knocked the crowd BACKWARDS!! I don't think anyone (including myself) knew who there were. I owned that record withn a week or two and it still completely blows me away to this day. I would recommend to any fan of good hard rock music, if you don't have it, PICK IT UP. Their second one, Sufficiently Breathless is also a very good record although nothing could quite touch that first one. Everything you hear in this video is from that first record.

Original members from PURPLE, BUTTERFLY, WINTER. A super group that went no where, what a shame!
