RIP Eddie Van Halen - 316 Tribute by Nick Cutroneo

October 6th we tragically lost one of the most influential guitarists of the 20th century, Eddie Van Halen. EVH was a huge influence on me and I vividly remember getting VH1 and 1984 as a teenage in high school in the late 90's/early 00's and being blown away by his guitar playing. Songs like Eruption and Hot For Teacher became instant classics for me. I also remember going into my guitar lesson and asking my teacher "Do you know how to 'tap' on the guitar?" While my playing evolved over time and I went on to focus on classical guitar, I cannot understand his importance in shaping me as the guitarist I am today.

Not many Van Halen solos translate to the classical guitar - but I've always enjoyed 316, a piece he wrote and dedicated to the birth of his son, Wolfgang "Wolfie" Van Halen who was born on March 16th.

The guitar world shines a bit dimmer now that we've lost EVH - but his spirit lives on in the countless players he's inspired!
