Sep. 24 Large and Powerful Hurricane Helene to Hit Florida

People in the Florida Panhandle, Big Bend region and much of the central and eastern Gulf coast need to complete preparations for major hurricane impacts by Wednesday night before hazardous conditions arrive by Thursday. Time is running out to prepare for Helene's arrival. This will be "a large storm with life-threatening impacts" hundreds of miles away from where it makes landfall

Wow...Tampa native here....no longer live there but wish everyone in Tampa well. One thing about Florida, they are ready for hurricanes. I lived there most of my life and never worried about hurricanes. It was just something we learned to be ready for and prepare for. Tampa Bay is protected by Pinellas county. Tampa when you look at it on a map is truly a peninsula within a peninsula = Pinellas. Therefore, Tampa is more insulated by Pinellas county as a protective barrier. The last huge storm of my childhood was in the 70s....I was in Catholic school and we literally spent the whole school day in the office....parents came to pick us up and take us to our homes a bit later. The whole day looked like "night school" It was that dark. That year it was a full on combo of tornado and hurricane but we were never worried. Even when I was dropped off at the corner of my house, with water up to my knees, until I walked up to my home which was on higher ground, and my beautiful mother there to bring me inside, I wasn't worried. It was one of the best days of my life.
