Sheesh, I recently covered a small hole on my roof after wind damage in the same way. Going back up tomorrow to revise what I did and hope the damages aren't too severe. Really informative video. Thank you, sir, for the information.

Nope, Happens in the Hudson Valley NY as well.Same situation, only the person they called to apply the tarp was the same guy that installed the roof 2 months prior.12 ft of soffit damage from tree damage due to a storm. He covered half of a 7 sq section. He charged them $450 to do so.I was called in because of this charge. His greed cost him the job. I Had to replace the entire front of a raised ranch due to different lot numbers. The actual color of the shingles were like night and day although they were the same. The amount of shingles needed totaled 1 bundle to do original repair needed. If he left a bundle behind as I do, after an install it would have been repaired for far less then needed.Happens all of the time but all you can do is keep true and honest as you are and keep transparent to inform all of the homeowners too scared to go up themselves.Good channel TY

That info on how to properly cover damaged or leaking areas is super helpful. A whole video showing 2 or 3 different covering methods, with all the right steps and right materials and/or tools needed, would be rad. Actually showing how its done goes a long ways, if you could set-up a spot to do a few demonstrations somehow

My roof leaked last year. I tossed on a tarp and some 2x4s to hold it down. Worked ok I was planning on replacing the whole roof so damage to the roof was not a big consideration.

Heh. I did a tarp like this but the roof needed replacing anyway.

We tarp roofs all the time not exactly like that lol but keeping in mind the entire roof is being redone so tarping is not an issue, but in a repair situation there are better options as you clearly stated...

Most of the time, you can break pull those felt caps, break the shingles loose, and squirt some stuff in between on the hole - push down so it squeezes out of the top hole ... it's not as good as replacing it all, but it does work. Use a bad ass sealant like a urethane (vulkem). The ridge, maybe not.

This happens everywhere regardless of location. We've been doing roof repairs since early 2000s. It takes a whole lot to surprise me these days . I've seen all kinds of butchery.

So replace a while section of roof is the better fix vs a tube of roofing caulk black and a new pack of shingles? Glad I can do my own roofing so I don't have to rely on a roofer upselling me needlessly on a quarter roof replacement to fix 3 damaged shingles and patching 30 nail holes. You act like putting some roofing caulk in the mail holes would be visible from the moon, while in reality you would never ever be able to see it from the ground right in front of the house. Replacing the whole section of roof for that damage is just crazy overkill.

Man, i had a similar problem with a leak, and even my foolish DIY mind put a small 6x10 tarp that was secured over the roof with rope on all sides. It wasn't perfect, but it at least meant no roof penetration.

Instead of replacing the shingles remove nails and put one piece of Step flashing under the tab done

What kind of breathable underlayment would last two months exposed while adding 120 overhang rafters over 60 trusses? Thanks

Damn this sux, this is why it's best to call a roofing company asap. About how much does does a fix like this cost with everything you outlined, what's an approximate?

we tarp our roof and we might did the wrong thing coz the leak might not be from the roof but from the heater behind the ceiling. Now, how can we repair the roof with nail damage?

A good sneeze would blow that tarp off, use wooden straps people. That type of repair is common during wind storms particularly when there are hundreds of claims to address, insurance companies dont do partial repairs, the entire damaged side get replaced

Wow and I’m sure water leaks through the ceiling every time it rains

2:36 you can see damage on bottom as well. Likely the reason for such a long tarp.
