The Nonprofit Business Model Canvas

The Nonprofit Business Model Canvas is a one-page business plan template for nonprofits, charities, and NGOs. It's a visual thinking tool that leaders, staff, and trainers can use to rapidly prototype new revenue streams. The nBMC was adapted from the original canvas from Alexander Osterwalder.

There are three main things about this canvas to remember:

1. This might sound contradictory, but I say separate strategy from planning. Separate strategy from budgeting.

2. If you're a fan of Lean Startup principles, then you totally get that visual tools like the nonprofit business model canvas can help with many things. With this visual aid, you can decipher several things:

- Capture clues on your processes; what needs improvement? Further investigation?
- What activities are helping or hindering?
- What's providing value and what's waste?
- Assist leaders and staff to better describe their organization's structure
- Complex concepts are simplified
- Generate better ideas overall for your organization

3. Nonprofits, charities and NGOs must handle non-financial and financial outcomes. Thus, they need to see the relationship between the two and how resources flow to achieve those two categories.
