Ekonomiprofessorn: Jag hoppas att Donald Trump lyckas

De senaste veckornas utspel från USA:s president Donald Trump om handelstullar mot en rad olika länder och sektorer – varav flera dragits tillbaka på grund av inhemska protester från näringslivet – har medfört rejäl turbulens för världsekonomin.

Ekonomijournalisten Katrine Kielos satte sig ner för ett samtal med Richard Baldwin, professor i internationell ekonomi vid IMD Business School. Han har forskat på handelstullar i decennier och har kallats för ”en av de viktigaste tänkarna i den nuvarande eran av global osäkerhet”.

– Vi befinner oss i den mest osäkra fasen av internationell handel sedan den stora depressionen eller andra världskriget, säger han och pekar på USA:s oförmåga att ta hand om sina industriella arbetare som orsaken bakom ”kaoset”.

Baldwin beskriver vilka två scenarier som är mest sannolika för att förklara den amerikanske presidentens agerande. Han varnar för ett handelskrig av ”historiska proportioner” och en kommande recession i USA – och risken för en liknande ekonomisk utveckling som i Storbritannien efter Brexit.

– Ekonomin skadas oavsiktligt av populister som är ekonomiska analfabeter, säger Baldwin som samtidigt uttrycker att han hoppas att Donald Trump lyckas förändra USA.

I think the main takeaway from this is that the issue with the US as a society (and economy) is that the whole system is so extremly dependent on "jobs" since most Americans live paycheck to paycheck. So on one side of things you have all of these hyped automation companies (machine learning, self driving cars blah blah) investing billions into removing mundane jobs. Likely not so much due to necessity as to the "hype" or sci-fi influence.

So, when most things that requires manual labour is automated. What will the 50% of the population with an IQ lower than 100 do? Starve?

My point is that it is probably not in the interest of humanity to fully automate society. I would even argue that it probably, in most cases, not even economically sane. If I run a company and I save 1000$ a month by replacing an employee with some machine and then that employee can't find anything else meaningful to do. So instead, he ends up costing society 2000$ a month in welfare. Well, obviously, society as a whole lost efficiency.
