For those who haven't seen it, Veronese also painted a huge painting called the Wedding at Cana, which has over 100 figures. It's awesome.

I'm on Team Veronese - he hit it on the head, perhaps unknowingly.
Jesus said at various points that he "had sheep in another sheepfold, " alluding to God's will that "Gentiles" will become part of His Kingdom. Look at the diversity in this! It's representative of all the people Christ came to save and I love that.
If I just get to watch one video today, I'm glad it was this one. 🥰

Actually the Last Supper is right in the center so I don't find it so hard to find! Great description of the painting much appreciated.

Brave hombre...standing up to the inquisition...
That could have taken a very nasty turn...

Almost like Veronese's version of Raphael's 'The School of Athens'...

I think the problem for the Inquisition was another. Depicting the last supper in a rich party might be seen as an oblique reference to the luxurious lives popes and upper hierarchy of the church are living instead of adhering to the gospel message of a life of simple means. Some popes (Alexander VI and Paul II come to mind) would give those kind of festini routinely, in some cases including sex, real orgies, which are described by the Burcardo in his diaries. The Reformation had, as one of his pillars, the condemnation of the moral corruption of the Church of Rome, the fact that a pope behaves just like, let's say, a king of France. Seeing a last supper as this could certainly be constructed as a denonciation of what the Church became. It is understandable that the Inquisition was satisfied by the change in title, because by describing this as a dinner in the house of a rich man takes away all risks of hidden political messages.
