In Louisiana mulch is heaven for termites

I'll be the crazy lady that says i like arborist wood chips that break down and actually benefit the soil other than this sterile stuff. I understand that it looks nice in a business setting but it's really not benefiting the landscape at all.

People over mulch trees all over the place. But in the garden bed we use arborist mulch and we go hella thick. 6-12” for walkways but maybe 2-3” around plants

The HOA at my former house did that for 15 years at least. All the trees and shrubs are struggling.
I dug out my plants so they could get water and air.

The other thing, mulch by itself isn’t what you want, just like in nutrition historically eating nose to tail meant you got all sorts of additional essential nutrients, so to does laying down plant tip to root bottom and everything in between. Like the more you spread the whole tree out, not nice commercial mulch, but more arborist mulch. Providing the complete organism gives complete nutrition for plants.

Omg thank you for this, I own a tree service company and this is something I always talk with homeowners about. It’s crazy how many landscaping companies are uneducated or just like ripping people off.

Only mulch i use is grass cippings. Free and the plants seem to thrive.

Roger Cook used to call these mulch volcanos. He taught us to keep the mulch low enough to see the root flare at the base of a tree so the roots wouldnt gurdle the tree and choke itself to death. RIP Rodger.

Just buy mulch dye and a sprayer. Saves labor and materials.

I put on pine mulch because I have clay soil. It breaks down and I rake it all into the grass every fall and apply a bit more. My trees are gorgeous. That’s the way it should be done.

I lived at an apartment building for 2 years, trees had been planted 2 years before. Mulch volcanoes everywhere. Of course by the time I left, the leaves were thinning, then stopped altogether at the top, and I’m sure they’re all dead now. Bizarre. These are big expensive trees. I warned them but got yelled at instead. 🙄. Don’t throw your “pearls of wisdom” at swine. they turn and attack you. Jesus said it first and it’s still good advice 2000 years later.

If you use all natural native mulch top dressing, it allows the mulch to degrade more efficiently. I've seen the 6 inch mulch beds turn into a hard layer on top and tons of mold grows in between this

depends on the type of mulch your using

It's because all these crazy people want red mulch and it fades. I see it everywhere. I use mulch without any dyes. I add more when it breaks down, usually every 3 years. I think the red dye looks terrible but to each their own.
