Test Sieves Guide: Choosing the Right Specialized Test Sieve

Test sieves are simple in function, but they are still scientific instruments that should be purposely selected and used, and carefully maintained, BUT some applications require non-conventional test sieves.

Deep Frame Wet Wash Sieves
Deep Frame Wet Wash Sieves are designed for wet washing material over the sieve for fines content determinations, OR to wash away excessive fines from specimens. Deep Frame Wet Wash Sieves come in an all-Stainless-Steel frame and mesh or Brass frame with Stainless-Steel mesh construction in frame heights ranging 4in or 8in AND with lower flange drainage holes. And Deep Frame Wet Wash Sieves comes in either 3in (76mm), 8in (203mm), and 12in (305mm) diameters with either No. 100, No. 200, or No. 325 mesh sizes. Also, an Optional No. 30 backing cloth is available to reinforce finer mesh sizes, extending the service life of the sieves.

Two-piece nickel-plated Wet-Wash Sieves are corrosion resistant and use a replaceable ASTM E11 stainless steel mesh disc with opening sizes available from No. 60 (250µm) to No. 635 (20µm). These sieves are available in 2in, 3in, or 4in diameter frames. (Frames and Replacement Discs are ordered separately).

Replaceable Mesh Wet-Wash Sieves have interchangeable screen assemblies that combine ASTM E11 stainless steel wire mesh with a sturdy back-up cloth and are secured by a rubber gasket and stainless-steel fasteners. Replaceable Mesh Wet-Wash Sieves are 8in (203mm) diameter brass frames that can nest with conventional sieves and pans AND are available in 4in (102mm) or 6in (152mm) frame heights.

ASTM Precision Electro-Formed Sieves (ASTM E161)
Precision Electro-Formed Sieve’s mesh is produced using electrodeposition of nickel, producing a planar mesh with very precise square mesh openings formed by electrodeposition of nickel on a stainless steel substrate that range from 5µm to 75µm (Tolerances of ±1 to 2µm). Available in 3in and 8in diameter sieves, Precision Electro-Formed Sieves are designed for very fine granular materials.

Micron Air Jet Test Sieve
There are two type of Air Jet sieves. Older type air jet sieves for old-style Micron Air Jet sieve machines and standard sieve with an O-ring gasket added to the sieve for the new style Mikro air jet sieve. Air Jet Sieve machines uses gentle air pressure for separating 10 to 100g of dry powder samples and are ideal for pharmaceuticals, chemicals, ores, metal powders, aggregates, ceramics, cement, concrete, and coal.

Two-Part Replaceable Mesh Sieves
8in (203mm) diameter Two-Part Replaceable Mesh Sieves come with either Brass frames or Clear, Non-Metallic Polycarbonate frames. A disposable 10in Polyester or Nylon mesh (Sold separately) comes in many sizes No. 20 to 7 µm AND is tensioned within the frame halves to reduce contamination risk between sieving different specimens. AND some replaceable Sieve mesh for Two-part non-met sieves has gasket material already embedded in the mesh.

3” Non-Metallic Sieves
3” (75mm) Non-Metallic Sieves are designed for non-metallic special applications. Clear Polycarbonate frames are fitted with non-metallic Polyester monofilament woven mesh with opening sizes from No. 50 (300µm) to No. 635 (20µm). Sieves are autoclavable and they nest with each other, and are primarily used for wet sieving of small samples such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and metal powders.

3” Acrylic Frame Test Sieves
And finally, 3” Acrylic Frame Test Sieves are ideal for particle sizing and separation of small volume sample of dry powders. Their clear acrylic frames are precision machined and fitted with ASTM E11 stainless steel woven-wire cloth in opening sizes from 5.60mm to 20µm (No. 3 ½ to No. 635), or ASTM E161 Precision Electroformed cloth with openings from 150µm to 5µm (Accuracy of ±1 to 2µm). AND E11 Sieves can be verified to Inspection or Calibration Grades.
