As an engineer I take exception to that church and even the swatikar bldg. Both those were conceived by architects . Engineers are often saddled with carrying out idiot architect ideas

Note that Frank Lloyd Wright's design of the strength Fallingwater's cantilever was questioned by the engineer/construction manager. FLW told him to build it as designed, but the guy snuck in double the strength. In spite of this, the cantilever sagged quite a bit. The organization that owns the building went through a major restoration a while back to prevent any more sag. Another Architect getting in over his head.

You are wrong in saying that the Tacoma Narrows Bridge could have been prevented. The science at the time did not understand the forces that resulted in the bridge's collapse. They were trying to figure it out which is why we have such a good photo record. It took some of the best minds in aerodynamics and structural dynamics to figure it out in the aftermath!

The church in Dixon Illinois can’t be blamed on engineering this prize goes to the architects and the owner/ The Church for approving the design !

Architects should be required to consult with the future building's users, to be certain it will be fit for purpose.
As an ER nurse, I've worked in some terrible ERs, including one with the helipad on the roof, but no elevator to reach it!
My current ER has no fewer than seven sets of doors from the ambulance bay to the resus area, and four of the require swiping an ID badge to open them. How is that supposed to work when an ambulance crew brings in someone who is coding? They literally have to wait for someone to come swipe them through all these doors.

If nurses had been consulted during the design process, neither of these ridiculous buildings would have ended up like this.

That poor church building is suffering "Erectile Dysfunction", and the church members pray it
will "rise up" again! 🙏😉

My tree house collapsed when I was ten. So instead of taking the blame for poor design, I sued the property owner for planting bad trees. My dad hasn't talk to me since.😂

You have your facts wrong. The failure of the bridge was not in high winds it was due to harmonic vibration. Something they knew nothing about till then. The bridge failed in wind that matched its harmonic frequency.

You missed the London building with a south facing concave wall. At it's focal point it melts cars lol

It should be noted that at the time the Tacoma Narrows bridge was built, resonance of standing structures wasn’t know. The engineer who designed the bridge spend the rest of his life studying it. He had previously built a number of important bridges, some of which are still standing

When design began on the Iowa class battleships, separate teams worked to design the hull and turrets. Fortunately, before work had progress very far, it was discovered that the two teams were specifying different diameters for the 16" gun turret rings.

Now, that is the most creative piece of architecture I’ve ever seen.

A few years ago South Africa bought a bunch of trains that were too wide for the platforms AND too high to fit under the overhead power cables.

Architects design buildings....the form, function, materials and asthetics based on the needs and desires of the owner or user. Structural Engineers size the columns and beams to keep them from falling down. Mechanical Engineers design the HVAC systems to heat and cool them. Electrical Engineers design the wiring and communication systems for them. Civil Engineers design the site drainage systems to manage the water and keep them from flooding.

If the arena collapse is the one I'm thinking of, then the pooling water on the roof was a major contributor since the wind pushed the water all around the roof. This created a dynamic load on the roof structure that was higher than the static load of the water.

Bad title! The Tacoma-Narrows bridge was at the time an unknown event. It was only after it that they figured out what was wrong. Before that NO ONE KNEW!

If memory serves the French train issue was actually a failure of the maintence department to undertake the necessary modifications in time. It was cheaper to buy standard trains and mod the platforms than design bespoke trains for a part of the network.

The Surfside condo disaster can now be added to this list. RIP to all the many victims who were killed in the building collapse!

"Fig leaf coming soon." A good thing there was no fountain placed near the tip and flowing away. Now that would be quite unseemly.

I was stationed on that base in San Diego. When the buildings were built, the big trees in that photo weren't there originally. The open courtyard area that connects those buildings made it obvious they were separate. Over time since they were built, the trees got bigger and the courtyard surface just got darker with age, which made it look like it's one solid building instead of four separate ones. The design was definitely not intentionally meant to look like a swastika.

3:32 thats technically not the same thing as what the nazi's implemented as a symbol of hate, originally a Sanskrit symbol roughly translated meaning well-being or all is well or depends where you look also can be a symbol of good faith. now having it turned 45 degrees to the right turning it into the symbol of hate every one knows
