NASA's Low-Earth Orbit Flight Test of an Inflatable Decelerator, or LOFTID, launched Nov. 10, 2022, to demonstrate inflatable heat shield technology. After liftoff on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket, LOFTID inflated and deployed in space. After being released by the rocket’s upper stage, the heat shield re-entered Earth's atmosphere and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean. The team recovered the LOFTID aeroshell and early indications show the demonstration was successful.

The LOFTID test was so overlooked but it was possibly more important than the Orion capsule in relation to the future of space flight.

I'm so pleased to see the test was successful. This sort of idea has been around for some 60 years. I recall reading about an unfolding wire mesh decelerator/heat shield like this in "Flight" or "Aeroplane" circa 1963, I think proposed by Avco.

Nice! Such missions don't get much press, but they're vital advances in technology.

We designed and built the prototypes 9 years ago.
Looks like the same design.
Great test result.

Now that's what we need, innovations that change the future, way to go Nasa team.

A lunar rover with the right stuff could put thousands of heat shields to great use fast.

Theoretically can a human in a space suit be strapped on the inside if that thing and ride it down in an emergency?

So it confirms why aliens built flying saucers in this shape to have protection against heat, radiation etc etc

Great! looks ready to start being used to recycle those Falcon 9 second stages. GO NASA go!

Yay science! This LOFTID is sure to be the solution to the opioid-crisis, homelessness, and a deeply divided nation! THANK YOU NASA! ...Space!!!
