Ted Nugent's Testimony on Michigan Baiting Bill

Michigan has lost 142,980 deer hunters over the past 20 years. A new law banning the use of bait while deer hunting was installed this year, and lawmakers believe it will drive even more hunters from the woods. To repeal the ban, lawmakers introduced House Bill 4687 last month. During the bill's introduction, state native Ted Nugent spoke to the House Government Operations Committee inside the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing on Tuesday, Sept.17, 2019.

Hunting over bait of any kind is absolutely no different than fishing. When you fish you use a lure or bait to catch a fish. At that point you can catch and release or put it in the cooler, live well, or what have you. The same goes for hunting over bait. Corn, food plot, oats etc. You choose whether or not to shoot the deer or let it walk. Hunting tags are too expensive to get skunked year after year. You should take advantage of whatever legal method to be successful in you hunt and put meat in your freezer.

No matter what you think of Ted no one can doubt his commitment to the outdoors and wildlife and expertise on the subject. Personally I am a big fan being a Detroiter and hunter myself.

The Motor City Madman knows deer. Like Ted said “let the people that live breath and hunt deer decide”.

You can bet if the Michigan DNR finds a larger than normal amount of apples under your apple tree on your hunting property while you are hunting deer they will do DNA test to see if in fact those apples came from your tree just so they can prosecute you for baiting so they can make an example of you.

our group of 5 hunters, 3 out-of-state hunters are done with hunting michigan. we will go to another state. Michigan DNR is out of control, now you have to register your kill within 72 hours or face a criminal record. Outrageous

Amen to that, if I could I'd give this damn video 1m👍, I've been a michigan resident all my life, I'm an outdoorsman I absolutely love to be in nature back to the roots where we started. The baiting law is a spit in the face of all us hunters that do everything to abide by the rules of the sport. I know multiple people who quit hunting because they relied on that bag of corn set out in a suburban country areas hunting small lots of land. Theres only so much you can do to the land to get the deer to inhibit there living standards to be there, that's fact Jack. I'm 110% against the ban on baiting. Love what Ted had to say its 100% the truth.

I think the argument isn't whether hunting over bait is wrong. It's is whether banning the use of bait is going to make a difference with the spread of CWD.

MICHIGAN needs strict processing laws. No mixing peoples deer. Dont take jerky meat from every deer that comes in and trade stick meat for it. Every hunter should get their OWN MEAT back. No manipulation of meat. Market's steal meat this way and make jerky to SELL.

Well spoken Ted. You are in the woods a whole lot and have many years of experience hunting and watching deer. I appreciate your passion, and share it with you. You are 100% correct about deer swapping spit. It doesn't matter if it's under an apple tree, a farm field, or bait in the woods.Banning baiting in any form is devastating to the farmers and stores who sell it. There is zero evidence to prove that baiting has any negative effect or spreads CWD faster than any of those other entities. CWD is no new disease, just testing for it is recently more advanced and prevalent. Because of that, the DNR panics when a few deer here and there test positive for the disease. CWD was around when baiting was unlimited and there were piles of apples, corn, sugarbeets and carrots by hunter's stands and blinds. It has been around for the years when 2 gallons was the limit. None of the baiting was a factor, just more and better CWD testing, so more deer have been detected with the disease. I agreed with spreading the bait out, and mainly used shelled corn. I never saw deer nose to nose on my bait with many years of hunting. Yes, sometimes there were a few deer there, but with the bait spread out, it was just as natural feeding as they experience in a crop field, under apple trees, or grazing on clover or grass. I'm so disgusted that for the 1st time in many years I'm not bowhunting. I have limited time because of work, and the baiting ban turned me away. Ted, Curt....keep fighting for us. Proud of both of you for standing up for us hunters, and being our voice!
