As a friend of mine said they are educated out of usefulness. He was telling me about a guy he went to school with who had a PhD in math and said he couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper bag.
My friend had a bachelor's in math but said he only bothered to get it since all the courses were done to get his various master's degrees in engineering.
