This Expressway Build Changed the City Forever! | SB 9

Segunda Beach is booming—and it’s easy to see why. With its stunning location, unique architecture, top-tier university, and a brand-new cruise port, the city was bound to attract new residents.

Unfortunately, the rapid growth has overwhelmed the city’s infrastructure. With no state highways and limited connectivity, traffic has become a nightmare—and it’s driving businesses away. Even major employers like Drake Oil say the poor infrastructure is holding them back. Some local businesses have already shut their doors, citing traffic as the reason customers stopped coming.

Faced with growing pressure, Mayor Beacon forms an unlikely alliance with a longtime rival to push for a long-delayed highway project. But instead of a full-blown interstate, state planners proposed a more balanced solution: an expressway designed to preserve the region’s rural character while easing congestion.

In today’s episode, we’re bringing that expressway to life and by the end, we'll completely fix Segunda Beach’s traffic problems —for now at least!

I think an episode making a really detailed large-scale park would be fun. Something that could benefit both the commmunity and attract tourists. Maybe some artificial lakes, a botanical garden, a golf course

Man, this is some top tier nerdy infrastructure. Love this. Always a good day when SB or Magnolia episodes are out.

I would love to see you build a Chinatown neighborhood in SB. The west coast is very rich in Chinese American history and I think it would be appropriate to have one in your town, now that there are a few assets that would support its implementation. But I also know that your city here is a little small rn so I totally understand if you think it’s too early. Maybe when you’re doing a more historical neighborhood/downtown it would make sense to have Chinatown be part of it, like in SF.

Its just so magic to follow you here. So full of ideas and stuff. Been follow you for 33 months and Im learning stuff every time I look at your videos. Thanks for keeping an almost 70 year old swedish amatur builder just looking at your videos over and over again. Thanks for this.

That level of density with the single family homes looks very real in an area like this! Feels like I'm looking at google maps, well done.

The storylines are what make this series the Best CS1+2 on the Platform. Many of the others feel cold or dead, while this one introduces realistic characters, with motivations and storylines. Please keep doing them, and perhaps expand this aspect of your CS series!

As a longtime Bay Area resident you nailed that Central Coast vibe. It reminds me of Pismo Beach, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, and other similar towns. That expressway really was the missing link. My top suggestion for your next build is a state park or state beach. Something akin to either Big Sur Pfeiffer, Natural Bridges, or Oceano Dunes or a more inland one. There are so many county and state parks around coastal California in general that is essential to a build like this. Really enjoy the episode overall hats off.

Hey Phil! Its the Venturan here again. Somehow just this build made it feel wayy more like up north. Gotta say though, to add realism to PCH and the 101 you have to make sure these highway/expressway rebuilds take at least 50 years. CalTrans belligerency is unrivaled! Jokes aside, episode was a pleasure as always. Thanks!

I cannot get enough of the "street view"-style footage. It really shows what a great job you've done with this build and making it feel Californian!
I think the city needs some libraries and places of worship for the citizens, and maybe a check-in to see how the services are holding up, especially after the latest patch.

45:12 Man! This little bit after the City Tour is exactly what they need to be! I still really do not care for them TBH, but this was fantastic. More first-person cars (and people - third person Cim-follow feels very stalkery) going mostly normal speed is just so fantastic. So cool to see your hard detailing work at ground level. The city really feels like a place where the story comes alive. Even if you keep the before/after city tours as is, I hope you continue to keep this “thoughts on the build at street level” closing segment. LOVED IT. 🛣️

40:04 if you put the pocket park on the other side of the cocktail lounge, it can be used as an outdoor extension of the lounge.

As a lifelong Californian (Sacramento suburbs/Sierra Foothills for childhood and adulthood and Ventura County for college), that change with the density/housing truly looks like California now. We just ... don't really have trees in the way your builds usually do. Also, looking forward to the disaster response center as the child of an emergency manager ;)

I've grown up in SoCal all my life and this is really the first episode where I finally see California. I am so glad you brought the density up more and spoke to how every single plot of land is developed in California, especially by the coast. I love your channel, you make such incredible videos! Keep it up!

Something about that foliage along the expressway gave it a huge Verde Beach vibe. Love seeing low-angle/pedestrian-eye-view shots in the city tours, they really make the city feel real. Great work Phil!

I just did the PCH over the summer from San Fran all the to San Diego and this is nailing it! Love how the density changes elevated the build to feel way more realistic. It would be awesome to see some pockets near the coastline with maybe bixby bridge and Hearst castle! Great work, this has quickly become my favorite build of yours so far!

Hi Phil - this is practically my first comment on the whole of Youtube.

Having been watching, following, and learning from you for many years, I've finally made the decision to become a member of your channel for this video (and I ask myself the question why I didn't do it earlier!). Segunda Beach is, hands down, my favourite CS2 series and everytime an SB video comes out I'm go straight into it. May I take this opportunity to say a realy BIG THANK YOU for always providing top notch content and beautiful building advice. Will keep rooting for you!
