Take Your Chess Skills To The Next Level With High-Quality Courses

In this game, Magnus Carlsen broke nearly every chess rule, violating all the standard opening principles—and still managed to defeat a 2500-rated grandmaster in just about 20 moves.

This was Carlsen's game against Grzegorz Nasuta, where he played the Grob Opening (1.g4)—arguably the worst chess opening from an objective standpoint. But he didn’t stop there. On the second move, he sacrificed a pawn, and just a few moves later, he pushed 4.h4, advancing yet another flank pawn.

Watch this jaw-dropping game to see how Magnus Carlsen brilliantly outplayed his GM opponent using unconventional and audacious moves!

I think Magnus Carlsen has arrived where Bobby Fischer arrived in 1996:
bored with rote-memory opening prep and having a strong desire to get to the "real chess" of the middle game.
Carlsen should play Fischer 960 chess, where the first move puts you into the middle game.
Most (all?) very strong players should "retire" from classical chess and specialize in 960 chess.

Can't wait to play this against my 1600 opponents

Tried that against Martin chess bot. Martin chess bot didn't fall for that trick and played counter, and fell down after 35 moves instead of 17.

For many years, living in Santa Cruz, California, I played blitz against a very creative Steve Sullivan, who specialized in the Grob.

As strange as that opening is, it is not actually bad. After exploring its possibilities from the other side, I found enough merit in it to incorporate it into my own repertoire.

In consequence, the line played in this game is not unfamiliar. I have played both sides of it.

Unlike Steve, I never made it my staple. But in chess as in much else, variety is the spice that brings life to our endeavors, and I fully expect the Grob to become a respected choice among even the strongest players.

Hans played principle chess. Dubious attack on the side. Counter attack in the center. Well done.

Igor doesn't know... You don't have to "defend that pawn position" at all. The pawn becomes a weakness as it must stay in place to protect black's board.

Once the pawn moves, the entire board is open.

4:44 I think retreating the queen is a mistake here as he could have moved his queen next the pawn triggering a series of events that would at the least put him up in material without any risk to the queen, unless I am missing something here.

This was brilliant ownage by Magnus, baiting his opponent to weaken their defenses and neutralize their offense.

According to engine analysis, black made many bad moves with his bishops. In fact, his only good bishop move was taking the rook on h1. And as for knight to f6, that move was also bad but only because of bad timing - should have been played in move 5, 7 or 8.

At 9:10 aren’t the black better off with Q e8 ?(instead of moving the knight)

Magnus is so good that he makes bad moves and still wins

Black went in panic mode because MAGNUS played g4, got stroke and never recovered. Grob is "bad" not because it loses game on the spot but it gives up White advantage and weakens its king side. Black never took initiative through the game, played mostly forced moves and lost on their wish.
