Loud sounds from Seagate Iron Wolf 8TB in Synology DS720+ NAS

I recently purchased a Synology DS720+ NAS and two Seagate Iron Wolf 8TB hard drives (ST8000VN004). The hard drives are making a sound that, to me, seems unreasonably loud. I can easily hear it "pop" and "click" from the next room.

Thanks for the video. I can confirm it. I just got two Seagate Ironwolf 8TB and the noise is super loud and annoying. I cannot understand how this drive is rated so good on Amazon. Will return them tomorrow and think of getting WD Red Plus which should be less noisy in general. Would like to get WD Red Plus 8TB but those run on 7200rpm and the WD Red Plus 6TB run on 5640rpm and consider the latter one because lower rpm should mean lower noise levels and i don't need super performance.

I just got a DS723+ last week and the same drives. My wife thought it sounded like water falling inside a downpipe.

my synology ds220+ with 2x 8TB seagate ironwolf drives make this same noise. I can't figure it out as well! Drives me crazy. Is this normal?

I did manage to make most of the loud clicking noises disappear by physically creating more distance between my 3 drives inside the computer casing. They definately influence each other when they are mounted directly next to each other....this sound in the movie however seems to be more like the drive reading stuff, not the most annoying head parking clicking and peeping. I also installed a tool called KeepaliveHD that write small files every 30 seconds to prevent the heads from parking.

So has anyone figured out if this is normal noise? I just want to know since my IronWolves Pro are making the same noise. The noise doesn't boughter me but I do want to know if its normal.

Some drives can have some noise. My Toshiba drives does same noise. It's not the NAS' fault.

Thats the rpm, most of them run at 7200 rpm, picking a 5400 rpm should be mor quiet.

Ironwolf 12TB + DS224+ still sounds like this. I thought there's a problem with my new device. The only way I could do that was to move it outside of my room.

Why is this Seagate disk so shitty in 2021 (when it comes to loudness)? I thought such loud disks were 20 years ago.

Yo hoy compre un seagate skyhawk de 4tb y mismo ruido y hasta vibra mucho, mañana pienso devolverlo porque es literal molesto, aunque en si el ruido no sea perjudicial.

My Toshiba N300 10TB makes exact same noise

am I really this old? Yes HDDs compared to SSD make noise. If you really want a relatively silent NAS and want to get rid of this clicking noise you can replace the HDDs by 2.5" SSDs which is quite more expensive today (maybe this changes in future) and probably is not as durable as an HDD, as SSD have a more limited Write count than HDDs. If you do this HDD to SSD swap i would recomend to take NAS Grade SSDs or at least have a look as you take SLC or MLC and not TLC or QLC. TLC and QLC have a higher Data Density whih means they are more likely to go defective faster.
So to simply answer this Questions @Robert Tang : Yes this Noise is normal with Mechanical Drives.
