Červenka obecná je malý pták z čeledi lejskovitých.
Popis
- Délka těla: 12–14 cm
- Rozpětí křídel: 22 cm
- Hmotnost: 16–18 g
Červenka obecná má kulovité tělo s dlouhým ocasem a končetinami a krátkými křídly a zašpičatělým zobákem.
Svrchu je světle hnědá, zespodu modrošedá a bílá, na hrdle a na obličeji má nápadnou rezavočervenou náprsenku.
Oči a zobák jsou černé, končetiny šedé.
Jednotlivá pohlaví se zbarvením neliší.
Mladí ptáci postrádají rezavočervenou náprsenku a mají nevýrazné skvrnění.
Hlas
Vábí hlasitě „ciks“, varuje pronikavým tenkým „síh“, zpěv je slabší, melancholicky flétnový a zvonečkovitý. Samec zpívá na stromech a keřích, často za šera.
Výskyt
Obývá většinu Evropy (kromě severu Skandinávie) od Irska přes Ural až do západní Sibiř.
Jižní hranice rozšíření probíhá od severozápadní Afriky do Malé Asie.
Částečně tažný druh, zimující v západní a jižní Evropě a na jihozápadě Asie.
V ČR pravidelně hnízdí, protahuje; někdy zimuje. Žije na celém území od nížin po horní hranici lesa v horách.
Žije samotářsky v lesích všeho druhu, zejména s bohatším podrostem a členitým terénem, dále v remízcích, větších porostech křovin a ve starších parcích a zahradách. Na tahu často v zahradách nebo břehových porostech.
Život
Létá rychle, při vyrušení jen do nejbližšího keře.
Živí se drobným hmyzem a jeho larvami, pavoukovci i jinými členovci, v létě a na podzim i rostlinnou stravou.
V Evropě hnízdí od dubna do července. Během námluv jsou samci vysoce teritoriální.
Samice klade do miskovitého hnízda z mechu, listí a trávy (umístěného v dutinách stromů, zemních polodutinách, porostu popínavých rostlin atd.) 2–8 bílých, červeně skvrnitých vajec o velikosti 20×15 mm.
Inkubační doba je 13–14 dní.
Na vejcích sedí pouze samice. Mláďata opouštějí hnízdo po 12-15 dnech. První oranžovočervená pera na hrudi se jim začínají objevovat po 2–3 měsících; stejně jako dospělci jsou zbarveni až po dalších 3 měsících.
Průměrný věk: 1 rok
Nejvyšší naměřený věk: 19 let

- Length: 12.5–14.0 cm (5.0–5.5 in)
- Weight: 16–22 g (9/16–13/16 oz)

The male and female bear similar plumage; an orange breast and face, lined by a bluish grey on the sides of the neck and chest.
The upperparts are brownish, or olive-tinged in British birds, and the belly whitish, while the legs and feet are brown.
The bill and eyes are black.
Juveniles are a spotted brown and white in colouration, with patches of orange gradually appearing.
Distribution
Eurasia east to Western Siberia, south to Algeria and on the Atlantic islands as far west as the Azores and Madeira. It is a vagrant in Iceland. In the south-east, it reaches the Caucasus range.
It prefers spruce woods in northern Europe, contrasting with its preference for parks and gardens in Ireland and Britain.
Life
It is diurnal, although has been reported to be active hunting insects on moonlit nights or near artificial light at night.
It is drawn to human and animal activities involving the digging of soil, in order to look out for earthworms and other food freshly turned up.
In autumn and winter they supplement their diet of terrestrial invertebrates, such as spiders, worms and insects, with berries and fruit.
Males are noted for highly aggressive territorial behaviour.
Average life: 11 year
Maximum: 19 years
They choose a wide variety of sites for building a nest. Anything which can offer some shelter may be considered.
The nest is composed of moss, leaves and grass, with fine grass, hair and feathers for lining. 2 or 3 clutches of 5 or 6 eggs are laid.
The eggs are a cream, buff or white speckled or blotched with reddish-brown colour, often more heavily so at the larger end.
When juvenile birds fly from the nests they are mottled brown in colour all over. After 2 to 3 months out of the nest, the juvenile bird grows some orange feathers under its chin and over a similar period this patch gradually extends to complete the adult appearance.
It produces a fluting, warbling song during the breeding season. Both the male and female sing during the winter, when they hold separate territories, the song then sounding more plaintive than the summer version.
A variety of calls is also made at any time of year, including a ticking note indicating anxiety or mild alarm.
