Mensa worked because you could have conversations in which everybody had to accept that all the others may have a point. No one could be told 'Are you Stupid?' Free and egalitarian. Also, you never felt you had to dumb down your thoughts. Lastly, dating. Nobody had to worry if they looked too smart, geeky, or dumb. Someone [John D. MacDonald] said 'A friend is someone to whom you can say any damfool thing that comes into your mind and not worry.' At its best, that was once Mensa.

I left because when they moved to Texas and started the intensive merchandising of the Mensa copyright, dues went through the roof. It was being treated as a money-making machine. I had to ask myself, 'Why belong to a club where I know I'm not getting my money's worth? Do I have to be stupid to pay the rates?'

Insecure people think the validation is worth the money.

I miss the idea. I don't miss the implementation.
