In this video, we'll look at the basics on how to read a map. Understanding marginal information on topographical maps will better prepare you to use a map and a compass to know where you are and plan a route. Whether you're conducting urban or rural land navigation or participating in an orienteering course these basic skills will help you master your craft.

Marginal information on a topo map includes the scale of the map, sheet information, grid zone designators, scales, as well as symbols and colors that are found on the map.

There are five primary colors on a map as well as contour lines to graphically depict a portion of the earth's surface as seen from above. While there are several types of maps, the skills talked about in this video will apply to all: military maps, topographical maps, USGS maps, as well as city maps.

is there no relation to the grid line numbers and the coordinates? Im confused why they have different numbers on the sides. For land nav do i disregard the coordinates and just use the grid or am i completely fucked up right now? lol thank you!
