The movie did get delayed and got released at a time where the competition in the theaters was more fierce. The old bad design was better in quality (not talking about how visually appealing it was). They wouldn't put less work on the final design if it was always intended to be that. Also, as some said. They made merchandise with the older design too. All 3 of these show that it wasn't a stunt.

You know how much money they make from toys? I remember a distinct lack of toys for the new sonic design when the movie came out. It definitely wasn’t on purpose the lack of toys proves the decision was last minute. They wouldn’t miss a huge money maker like that on purpose.

To explain: The sonic the hedgehog movie first design was god awful, but the theory is that the redesign was planned. This means Hollywood animation studios knew what they were doing, but because of the movie, Cats, they clearly don’t, and they just let out whatever garbage is first produced.

The one thing that is unclear is, why was the sonic movie redesigned and Cats wasn’t. Maybe it is because Sonic had a bigger fanbase

you're also leaving out the fact that they had to delay the movie one final time after they announced a design change after already having several delays beforehand. why would they go through the effort and set up a fake delay? that wouldn't have made any sense from an advertisement perspective given that delay announcements actually hurt the hype for a movie.

So many things such as merchandise, concept art, style guides, props, etc. prove that the old design wasn't a publicity stunt; that's *actually* the design they were gonna use.
