Kevin Rudd has all the skills to make US Ambassador appointment a 'raging success': Hockey

Former US Ambassador Joe Hockey says Kevin Rudd has spent a "lifetime in diplomacy" and he’ll deploy all of his diplomatic skills to make his new appointment a "raging success”.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced Mr Rudd will be Australia's next Ambassador to the US.

“It’s good for diplomacy, it’s good for Australia and I’m sure the Americans will give him a warm welcome,” Mr Hockey told Sky News Australia.

“The starting point in Washington, DC is people will want to meet you.”

Joe Hockey was the treasurer of Australia and then became ambassador to the USA, I don’t remember anyone arguing that he could become a second foreign minister when he was appointed.

It was expected Labor's appointment as Australia's Ambassador to the United States has always been a position that rewards Labor loyalists.

But prior to the election, Anthony Albanese would shoot down any suggestions former prime minister Kevin Rudd would be appointed to the plum diplomatic post of Australia's next ambassador to the US if Labor wins the election.

The opposition leader rubbished reports he is 'in favour' of appointing Mr. Rudd to the plum diplomatic post.
