Would someone with tattoos be able to join - Ask Laura?

Time for some more questions. Thanks for sending them in!

0:00 - How would the Bruderhof respond to female members who felt that they were not called to motherhood? Would they still be encouraged to marry?
0:48 - Would a Catholic be able to join the Bruderhof and still practice?
1:20 - Would someone with tattoos be able to join and if so would they have to keep the tattoos covered? What if they were on their arms/hands?
1:57 - Hi Laura. I was wondering how the Bruderhof feel about firearms? As pacifists I assume you’re against the use of them to harm others, even in self-defense. But what about shooting as recreation or for hunting? How do the Bruderhof feel about hunting?
2:59 - I was wondering about your head coverings. I saw some old pictures of the original Bruderhof and the women weren't wearing any. When and why did this practice start?

Tattoos have been a fad for millions of years so I think there is some life in it yet .

Tattoos can be very personal and meaningful to those who have them, so I think it's not very fair to call it a fad, especially because it's been around for a very very long time. There's no shame in being old with tattoos.

I am an Eastern Orthodox Christian, and I just wanted to say I appreciate your answer about Catholics joining. We are all awaiting the day we can be one Church again, as we are all part of the body of Christ. Love and just hope for blessings for you all, from Texas.

of all the things in life, it would be shallow to worry about a tattoo and appearance when elderly ...more like thank god grandma is still with is

I'm covered in tattoos, I'm 42 and only found the lord after a long life of mayhem and abuse. It's been around three yrs of servitude and I feel my tattoos are a constant reminder of my life before being saved. Therefore they are not a necessarily a blot on my faith but a reminder of the lack of it.

How killing inocent animals and non-violence could possibly go hand to hand?

I appreciate your willingness to share your life, community and time with us.
I'm in Canada and am familiar with Hutterites, are there similarities?
We have a Saskatoon Orchard on our farm and during the 10 years that we ran a U-pick, we had the Hutterites come out to pick a lot. We even became a trusted destination and the picking team of late-teens, early-twenties young ladies were allowed to come to our place by themselves. We spent many many hours and days sharing our lifestyles out in the orchard. It's time I cherish.

It's amazing how many people clicked on this video knowing fully well it was going to be about this person's way of life and opinions on things found it necessary to leave comments berating her for the way she chose to live life and her views of life. That's pretty hypocritical in my book. Why is it okay for people to live however they want to until it goes against what you believe?

Tattoos have been around a lot longer than any “fad”.

Tattoos have been around forever. Tattoos can be touched up and refreshed. So I'm sure I'd love to sit down with the older people who have tattoos cause it's a peice of their time and super interesting

Thank you so much for sharing this. I too felt called to cover a few years ago and have found so much peace and joy in it. It has really helped me to humble myself, especially in a world of looks and outward appearances mean so much, which sadly is even in the church. We are called to be set apart, different, unusual, spotless, and blamelesss, not look and act like the world around us. I was called out publicly for it in church which was so embarrassing, but I didn't let it faze me because you don't know what you don't know. I grew up in the church and had never known anyone to cover and never heard teaching on it, so I can see how people simply don't understand it. In my research I studied 1 Cor 11 for months and months. Especailly looking into the meanings in Greek.
The word for covering in 1 Corthians 11:4, 5, 6, 7, 13,  is the word, katakalýptō, from katá, "down, and kalýptō, "to cover"–cover down, to make appropriate (complete), i.e. to wear a veil.
It is the same word used for the veil that separated the Holy of holies from the priests. It is clearly taking about a peice of fabric.

But vrs 15 does NOT use the same word for covering. Vrs 15. "but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering."
This is a different word for "cover"= "peribolaion, " that which is thrown around or a mantel that can be thrown around (As in when a women tosses or throws her hair around) which can be very alluring to men.
This is where we get the saying, "Let your hair down."
Up until only the last generation woman covered in Church. It was only during the sexual revolution that Chriatin women in North America stopped covering their heads. ALL of our grandmothers would have covered in church. This is why the Hutterites, Mennonites, Amish, orthodox churches, and messiniac Jews (Jews who beleive in Jesus) etc still cover their hair.

Also, here's some verses in the OT about head covering. Hope these help if anyone is interested.
Isaiah 47:1-2. Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans! For you shall no more be called tender and delicate. Take the millstones and grind flour, "put off your veil", strip off your robe, uncover your legs, pass through the rivers.
(So as we can see, even virgins were to keep their heads covered and save their hair for their husbands. Otherwise it is like they are showing all their nakedness).

Numbers 5:18. Then the priest shall stand the woman before the LORD, "uncover the woman’s head, " and put the offering for remembering in her hands, which is the grain offering of jealousy. And the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that brings a curse.

Also Genesis 20:16 says in the Hebrew
Then to Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; indeed this is "a covering for her eyes" (to put back on her wedding covering) you before all who are with you and before everybody.” Thus she was rebuked.

From what I understand In Genesis 24:65. Rebekah covers herself because the bridal price has already been paid. 2 vrs later we see Isaac take Rebekah bright away into his tent. There was no wedding ceremony. Her covering herself was an outward show of her marriage to Isaac. Since they were married he was allowed to take her right away into his tent and "uncover" her.

We are not supposed to be like the world. So thank you for sharing.

1 Corinthians 11:1-18
Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you. But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ,  the head of a woman is the man  and the head of Christ is God. Every man who prays or prophesies with his head unveiled dishonors his head,  but every woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven. For if a woman will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her veil her head. For a man ought not to cover or veil his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man. For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. That is why a woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. Nevertheless,  in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God. Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head unveiled? Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him,  but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering. If anyone is inclined to be contentious, we have no such practice, nor do the churches of God.

(Paul says they have no practice of arguing about this. This is what the churches of God do. Period!)

If violence is not even allowed in self-defense, what about in defending someone else who is defenseless? Would someone be obligated to allow a child to be kidnapped if the kid could not be rescued by nonviolent means? If an elderly person was being attacked, could someone jump in and fight the attacker if they won't stop?

I really hope you are still reading comments here. We watched this video and in the answer to the question about the head coverings, you refer to an older video with the explanation about them, and that you would put a link to that video in the description. Unfortunately, we weren't able to find that link in the description. We checked out your playlist and we couldn't find any video about the head coverings or clothing tradition in there either. Perhaps a small oversight or maybe you forgot that you promised that link? Either way, would it be possible to still add that link and/or put it here in answer to this question? Thank you very much!

I really like your kindness, Laura. As someone who very much believes in God and everything about Him, I'm very happy that you aren't a very judgemental person. In my experience in the Church, I have seen a lot of judgement. You seem very kind and accepting to people. I really appreciate that. Thank you for this channel and your loveliness ❤️
