I don't think a welded bearing's the best idea, as it would probably end up corroded and then seizing. I suspect a simple piece of steel tube would have been quite adequate and more reliable too.

A good welder would never have to stitch weld like that it bugs me when garbage welders put content up like this it's only cool for people who don't know what there looking at.
