I drove across this from North to South in 1992 when it was only 2-lanes. There was a tornado warning in the area when I got near the entrance. Since it was early evening I decided to get a room and stayed in Kiptopeke until the next morning. I didn't think driving over it during a tornado warning was a good idea. Much nicer the next day.

When my dad retired from the navy, he worked security here for a bit.
Haven't been here in years. Thanks for the memories.

I've driven that route from the Eastern Shore for years to and from Norfolk. Love the peace on the shore!!!

I have been over this Bridge\Tunnel so many times. I was born very near here. I have traveled on the Ferrys that at one time traveled across the Chesapeake Bay. I have fished under the pilings; I have fished over the tunnels. I have counted unfortunate sea gulls that dared to play 'chicken' with the traffic, especially at night. I have seen snow squalls blanket the road. I have seen aircraft carriers traversing the channels as I was dipping down into the tunnel, that's interesting. Never have I ever had a bad experience on the bridge, but the tunnels can be scary. I grew up in Virginia Beach area near the Amphibious base on Cottage Toll Road. All that has changed. I love the Eastern Shore, [Delmarva] and my Grand Parents, they lived on the Delmarva, [Native Americans] they are long gone now. I lived on the Outer Banks Lived on the beaches on the 'Shore'. Been across the Delaware Bay on some of the same Ferrys that were used here [Lewes DL. to Cape May] The Shore is an absolute jewel. It is the Land of Pleasant Living. Down sides are the Hurricanes, and the 'other' people are beginning to ruin the pristine nature of this whole area. So, see it now folks ... people are stupid and are for themselves, this area is really changing.

Once going over this in the wee hours of the morning, there was construction and we got stopped way out in the middle for like 15 minutes. It was SO dark out there! But I used to love seeing the pelicans and other wildlife on the Eastern Shore. Very pretty drive

Thanks for taking me on this trip again, I’ve got a great aunt who lives in Virginia Beach and I’ve not had the opportunity to visit in several years, this was always a highlight of the trip for me

Heading south from N.Y to Yorktown Va. I choose this rte.I found a few fun surprises. South bound there was a little cafe/gift shop. While have a coffee & looking out the window a submarine pop`s right up out of the water, so cool. North bound just at the end is a great spot for birding I spent several hours there & moved up the road to a town called Chincoteague, which I had never heard of, I stayed one night enjoying it so much I stayed another. Great fun to be on a road trip with very loose plans. Beautiful country out there.

Fun fact: one of the primary reasons there's a tunnel under the shipping channels and there's also the tunnels in the Hamptons Roads area is to make it impossible to blow up a bridge and block the channels. In addition to a large amount of commerce that flows through, you have the Norfolk Naval Yard which is the largest naval base on the East Coast (actually the largest base, period in terms of capacity).

Use to ride on this with my uncle alot when I was very young even when it was a two lane highway. Those were the good old days.

Excellent short and sweet touring info., especially the sight of Evergreen ship's full length. 👍🕊️
I truly admire this American engineering achievement.

That was so cool. I've watched many videos of people crossing this span but yours is the first that includes footage of a barge actually going through the channel. You lucked out with some awesome timing.

I been across a few times. The Hampton roads bridge tunnel is currently under construction. There building another bridge and tunnel parallel due to the amount of traffic and backups. It’s been a pblm for many years now. So basically will be 4 lanes both ways
