I'm very proud to say that the blues was born in my home state of Mississippi! There's no genre of music that comes from the soul and speaks to you like the blues!!!

Consider this: Blues was what brought that easy swing feeling to music. It's what made music musical. Before the blues, ALL Western music was highly metrical, straight up and down and right on the beat, with waltz tempo in 3/4 probably being the closest anyone had ever come to to that relaxed, easy swing we now recognize as the very heart and soul of music. Swing came out of the Blues, so these blues guys literally invented modern music, and did it while working sun to sun 24/7. Without them, we might still be trying to dance to Sousa Marches and string quartets.

As a guitarist no matter how many different genres I get into and play, blues is without a doubt my heart and soul. It’s what I first got into playing, it’s where I’m at my most comfortable, and it’s absolutely where I feel I can express myself the most. I always hate when players say they “strayed away” from the blues because of its simplicity. What that tells me is that they have absolutely no idea what the blues is all about and what it represents. It’s very easy to play marginally good blues but it’s very very difficult to play good blues that connects with people and is authentic. I’m forever grateful for this wonderful music and will unapologetically play it until I die.

I love playing blues harmonica, I've been at it for about 35 years now and once had the privilege to sit in with McKinley Morganfield, his whole band was gracious to me!!

I'm 5th generation California boy but dad's side was 5 generation Ozark before his kin came during Depression. 55 years ago I found blues, country, bluegrass roots ran deep. This view awoke something deep inside me. Thanks for putting this up for others to soak in.

I thank God that I learned about blues music in my early teenage years and now I'm in my late 60s, still listening. Then I picked up the guitar and learned a whole new joy, playing the blues. What's best is playing with others and feeling the music go back and forth. That'll stick with me till the day I die. The blues is a feeling as the song says. You know it when you hear it.

One Gospel singers once said "When you sing gospel you have a feeling there is a cure for what's wrong. But when you are through with the blues, you've got nothing to rest on."

This documentary omitted the great bluesman blind willie Johnson. His earthy brilliance was shining years before Robert Johnson came on the scene!
